Target group 

Students on CEFR level A2. Students of all programmes and faculties, students in the flexible study rights scheme (JOO), international students and non-university learners.


Recommended time after completing KK-KII102 Elementary Chinese 4 or ALKU-C508 Lower Intermediate Chinese course.

Learning outcomes 

Students are expected to be able to:

1.  Master about 150 new words and characters.
2.  Participate in most informal and some formal conversations on topics related to school, work, home and leisure activities with greater vocabulary and more complex structures.
3.  Compose long passages more than 300 words.
4.  Gain a better understanding of Chinese language, culture and society.

Completion methods 

This is a contact learning course with 28 contact hours and 26 hours of independent work. To complete the course at least 75% active participation in the course and completion of the agreed tasks by the deadline is required.


Starting level approximately CEFR A2. Have completed HSK3 level learning or have studied Chinese for at least 1 year; or have passed  HSK3 test or have  command of some 600 words and certain amount of grammar knowledge. If you are uncertain about your CEFR level, contact the teacher before signing up.


1. Read textual materials related to daily life topics, including family, friendship, festivals, customs, shopping, career, etc.
2. Practice listening, speaking, writing and reading skills through varieties of exercises.
3. Cooperate in pair work and group work to complete task-based activities, such as role plays, debates and delivering presentations.
4. Key language points such as: “不仅……而且……(not only, but also)”; “即使……也……(even if, still)”; “正好(just in perfect)”; “差不多(almost the same)”; “本来(originally)”; “不管(no matter)”; “甚至(even)”; “对……来说(as for…)”; “尤其(especially)”.

Study materials and literature 

HSK Standard course 4 (vol.1) textbook and workbook. Author: Jiang Liping; Edition: 2014-09, 1st edition; ISBN 9787561939031. Chapters 1-5  and other materials prepared by the teacher. The books can be bought at the Confucius Institute at the beginning of the course.

Activities and teaching methods in support of learning 

Listening, reading and writing exercises, oral exercises in pairs and in groups, as well as independent work(home assignments, essays, online assignments).

Assessment practices and criteria 

Assessment is based on the aspects mentioned under the course learning outcomes and consists of assignments, participation and performance in classroom activities, presentation and final exam.Exam (in the forms oral presentation & written essay) 50%; Class attendance & participation 30%; Assignment 20%.
The course is graded as pass/fail.
