Target group 

Students of all faculties, students with a JOO flexible study right, international students

Learning outcomes 

After completing the course, students will be able to cope in everyday interaction. Among other things, they will

  • Be able to talk about themselves and those close to them
  • Be able to describe their leisure time activities and immediate surroundings
  • Be able to talk about past events and their future plans
  • Be able to handle uncomplicated service and travel situations
Completion methods 

Depending on the group, one of the following:

  • A course that includes 52 hours of contact teaching and 56 hours of independent study, active participation (attendance at least 75%) and the completion of agreed assignments within given guidelines, or
  • A course implemented as blended learning that includes 42 hours of contact teaching and 66 hours of other study, for example, in the online environment of the course, active participation (attendance at least 90%) and the completion of agreed assignments in time

Starting level CEFR A1, Russian for Beginners 1 or corresponding studies, approximately 4 cr

Recommended optional studies 

Concurrently with this course, the KK-VEN103 Russian Grammar online course can be completed.

  • Improving pronunciation
  • Hobbies, uncomplicated descriptions of immediate surroundings, discussing past events in students’ personal lives (e.g., the places they have been to) and their plans, service and travel situations, asking for directions and moving about, certain basic situations associated with professional life, writing brief messages
  • Customs as well as basic vocabulary and constructs related to the above situations, including expressions of time (seasons, months), more pronoun and noun cases, conjugation and ordinal numbers

    The course trains students in all areas of language skills.

Depending on the group, one of the following:

  • Alestalo: Kafe Piter 1. Updated edition 2020. Finn Lectura, chapters 11–18, or
  • 2. 2020. Digital material, available in the Moodle area for the course
Assessment practices and criteria 


Oral and written learning assignments and examinations focused on the learning outcomes. The course includes a mid-course and final examination as well as other assignments, depending on the group, including online assignments.

Relations to other study units 

After or concurrently with this course, the KK-VEN103 Russian Grammar online course can be completed.
