Target group 

Students of all faculties, students with a JOO flexible study right, international students

The course is intended for students who have not studied Russian before.

Learning outcomes 

After completing the course, students will be able to handle the most routine interaction in Russian. Among other things, they will

  • Be proficient with the Russian alphabet and the basics of pronunciation
  • Be able to greet and say goodbye, as well as use the most important courtesy phrases
  • Be able to introduce themselves and others, share basic information about themselves and ask for such information from others
  • Be able to talk about their everyday life and that of those close to them
  • Be able to handle uncomplicated service situations
  • Be familiar with Russian customs
Completion methods 

Depending on the group, one of the following:

  • A course that includes 52 hours of contact teaching and 56 hours of independent study, active participation (attendance at least 75%) and the completion of agreed assignments within given guidelines, or
  • A course implemented as blended learning that includes 42 hours of contact teaching and 66 hours of other study, for example, in the online environment of the course, active participation (attendance at least 90%) and the completion of agreed assignments within given guidelines

No prerequisites. The online course KK-VEN001 - Get Started Learning the Russian Language can be completed before this course.

  • The Russian alphabet and the basics of pronunciation
  • Greeting, meeting others, sharing basic information about yourself and others (name, age, nationality, occupation, contact details, language skills), family and friends, everyday activities, visiting a café and shopping, making appointments, uncomplicated discussion on studying and working, writing brief messages
  • Customs as well as the most common basic vocabulary and constructs related to the above situations, including pronouns, noun gender, plural forms, expressing locations and objects, the present tense and basic numerals as well as expressions of time (days of the week, time of day)

    The course trains students in all areas of language skills.

Depending on the group, one of the following:

  • Alestalo: Kafe Piter 1, chapters 1–10. Updated edition 2020. Finn Lectura, or
  • 1. 2020. Digital material, available in the Moodle area for the course
Assessment practices and criteria 


Oral and written learning assignments and examinations focused on the learning outcomes. The course includes an interim and final examination as well as other assignments, depending on the group, also online.
