Learning outcomes 

After completing the course, students will

  • Have improved speaking skills in various communication situations
  • Have greater confidence in their personal oral fluency
  • Have improved their vocabulary proficiency

Starting level CEFR A1 (PDF). Italian for Beginners 1 and 2 at the Language Centre or corresponding skills (see Relations to other courses)


Topics include everyday life, studying, hobbies, travel, food and current issues.

Skills to be practised: Speaking and listening to Italian.

Study methods: Working in pairs and small groups.

Study materials and literature 

To be distributed during the course.

Assessment practices and criteria 

Assessment is based on the factors listed in the learning outcomes and methods of completion.

Grade: pass/fail

  • Regular and active participation in classroom work
  • Home assignments
  • 28 hours of contact teaching and 26 hours of independent study
  • Compulsory attendance (at least 75%)
Relations to other study units 

Can be completed concurrently with Italian for Beginners 2.
