The examination is held once every term and it consists of two sections testing written and oral language proficiency, respectively. Students first sign up for the written section, and after passing that are invited to the oral examination. The examination of oral language skills takes place approximately two weeks after the written section. Both sections must be completed successfully during the same term (autumn or spring).
The written section tests the students’ comprehension of factual texts as well as their production of written texts. The examination lasts for three hours.
Students can prepare for the examination by reading factual texts. The answers are given in the student’s mother tongue, primarily Finnish or Swedish. No dictionaries are allowed in the examination.
Students write an opinion piece (ca. 250 words) giving well-reasoned views on the topic.
In the written section, students may use a bilingual dictionary, which will be available in the auditorium. Students are not allowed to use their own dictionaries.
The examination is an interview, which lasts approximately 20 minutes and deals with topics related to studies and the student’s own field.
